Tetris Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Might Solve This

Whenever a major prize-giving event draws close, one notices a demand for introducing additional classifications to recognize unsung work and satisfy the passions of fans who have specialized interests.

Another commentator previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. Equally deserving are board games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it’s very subjective, and it will always spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an essential concession in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types effectively encompass many game types, and you can find room for numerous titles.

Not so for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Consider three of this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Which classification works between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles released every year without proper recognition in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition in any category in 2014
  • A different innovative game was excluded during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Only a few brain-teasers barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences in the world and have been for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience rivals well-known building titles competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and engaging with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. You could fill a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge interactive creation, creating some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Just like movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
