The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.
Video review systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.
Athletes will gain the option to challenge specific calls from the official, echoing the system already in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.
The new system will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This development follows just a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to re-examine other decisions, including:
- Whether a ball has bounced twice.
- If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Possible hindrance end of a point.
Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.
Practical Application
A recent example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.
The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire watched a video and determined the player was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
This technology are not new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system in place at all of its events.
Further Updates
Another change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves situations where fans have occasionally been unsure if a shot was in or out.
Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
